I just noticed that on OsX.3.9 Color Lists have the search ball above the Device string that keeps spinning forever. Tried it on the PowerBook too, same thing.
Tried tossing prefs>no luck. Could it be a problem of too many folders in the Colorsync folder?

I’m assuming you are not waiting forever for things to happen though?
I have seen this UI bug crop up on some systems in later releases of OS X. The ‘chasing arrows’ UI element just doesn’t get removed so you think something is going on even though it is finished… more of a cosmetic problem than anything else but annoying nonetheless
This is fixed in the upcoming bug fix…
